The Department for Transport has published an interim report on the six towns granted Cycling Demonstration Town staus in 2005.
Six towns received funding of approximately £5 per person, match-funded by their local authorities, to improve their provision for and level of cycling in an experiment to investigate whether levels of cycling could be increased and the benefits of doing so.
The paper takes evidence from a variety of sources and explains how they measure different impacts. It finds that cycling has been increased in each of the towns and particularly among middle and older age groups. Just on one health measure, it finds that a £1 invested on improving cycling is likely to reduce mortality to a value of £2.59, whic is arelatively high rate of return. When other health and different indices can be applied the rate of return is likely to be much higher.
