Britain's buses encouraged to become more Fuel-efficient through changes to Bus Service Operators Grant - 01/04/10

Changes in the way and rate that bus service operators grant is paid were announced by the Transport Minister, Sadiq Khan, on 15th December and will come into force in April 2010.

Operators outside of London who have achieved a 6% increase in fuel efficiency will be entitled to a 3% uplift in their grant, while those operating low-carbon buses can claim an extra grant of 6p per kilometre. Operators who have fitted ITSO smart card systems will qualify for an 8% increase in their grant and those with GPS equipment fitted on their buses will also be able to claim an additional 2%, provided they agree to share specific data with local authorities, central government and other relevant organisations. The government estimates that these measures amount to an extra potential £1,000 per bus in grants. They are part of a policy of making bus travel more fuel efficient and a move away from subsidising fuel to subsidising passengers, which requires accurate monitoring of passenger numbers.
